Brentwood, TN

Clinical care provider Spiras Health (Spiras) announced today it is teaming up with leading health and well-being company Humana Inc.(NYSE: HUM) to expand the availability of home-based, complex care management for eligible Humana Medicare Advantage members with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Now in effect, the agreement builds upon a pilot program and broadens the availability of Spiras COPD services to include a greater footprint within Indiana and Michigan for eligible Humana Medicare Advantage members who live in the two states.

Affecting approximately 16 million Americans, COPD encompasses a number of conditions – including emphysema and chronic bronchitis – that make it difficult for an individual to breathe. Many people with COPD, however, are not aware of their condition. The Humana-Spiras collaboration is intended to improve quality of life and health outcomes through earlier disease detection; care coordination; clinical assessments; improved patient engagement; and disease and medication education.

“COPD is a complex and serious condition, and slowing disease progression is critical in helping our members improve their health and stay out of the hospital as much as possible,” said Humana’s Regional Vice President of Health Services Nisha Patel, M.D. “This focus is especially important right now, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re pleased to team up with Spiras Health so that our members with COPD receive personalized, coordinated services focused specifically on their condition.”

Spiras works with a patient’s primary care physician to provide personalized, coordinated care. Its clinical teams, comprised of nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists, work with patients via either home visits, or virtually through telemedicine and by telephonic and digital means.

“Our collaboration with Humana is based on our shared commitment to an innovative care delivery model that aims to better health outcomes and the patient experience, while lowering the cost of care,” said Spiras Health Chief Executive Officer Brook Bishop. “Home-based, complex care management is more important than ever, as our patients navigate a complicated health care landscape due to COVID-19.”

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Other providers are available in the Humana network. Spiras Health may also contract with other plan sponsors.
