Bowers to partner with founder and president Brook Bishop to support company growth

Nashville, TN

Spiras Health will expand its executive leadership team with the addition of healthcare veteran Scott A. Bowers as Chief Executive Officer. Bowers will partner with company founder Brook Bishop who will continue as president to support growth and scale Spiras Health’s proven clinical model to help high-risk patients manage their illness

Bowers brings extensive payor and provider experience, with a focus on value-based approaches that address physical, behavioral, and social drivers of poor health outcomes and high healthcare costs. He most recently served as President and CEO of Passport Health Plan, a $2B statewide health plan in Kentucky, serving some of the most complex patients with chronic conditions. Previously, he was the National Medicaid President of Evolent Health, supporting the launch of three Medicaid health plans. Bowers has served on the Spiras Health Board of Directors since 2015.

“My passion has been to improve access to quality care to the most underserved and fragile populations, and I can’t imagine a better place to continue that work than at Spiras Health,” said Bowers. “Brook and team have created a unique, community-based solution that leverages evidence-based population health strategies proven to significantly reduce the need for the most vulnerable patients to visit the ER or hospital. There is tremendous opportunity to further expand the Spiras footprint to serve more patients and health plans, and I look forward to bringing this trusted brand to many more individuals with complex needs.”

Bishop founded Spiras Health in 2015 on the premise that providing specialists in the home of a patient dealing with complex chronic illness, along with technology-based support and alignment with medical providers, would vastly improve clinical outcomes and lower costs. Prior to Spiras Health, Bishop was the co-founder and Senior Vice President of Development for BreatheAmerica, a privately held healthcare company that he led from pre-concept to an annual revenue of approximately $50 million with operations in nine markets nationwide.

“Spiras is unique because we bring a multi-modal approach while building trust with our patients; in so doing, engagement in their own healthcare increases because they experience improvement in their quality of life,” said Bishop. “We are also solving for some of the biggest issues facing our healthcare system, including access to care and social determinants of health. We have refined our clinical model and we are expanding into more markets with more health plan partners. Scott is the right partner to support this growth and I am excited to work alongside him to bring our solutions to more patients.”

In 2020, Spiras Health’s patient volume doubled and growth in 2021 is expected to far exceed the prior year. After accounting for COVID-19 impact to utilization, hospitalizations and emergency room usage for patients were dramatically reduced. Even with the COVID-19 crisis, Spiras Health provided uninterrupted care to every patient, utilizing a combination of virtual and in-person visits.
